Every judge in Kintland has a lawbook on their desk with all the laws and crimes they can use in their judgment. Kintland has 3 kinds of crime that you can break, lighter crimes, heavy crimes, and federal crimes. Lighter crimes such as; parking offences, noise violation, or tresspassing. Heavy crimes such as; theft, murder, rape. And federal crimes such as; treason, corruption, or espionage, aply to government officials and people who commit crimes against Kintlands government. These crimes are punished arcordingly to their case hearing or hearings, there are minimum and maximum scentances a convict can be punished with. For lighter crimes its usually just a fine or extra unpaid work time, for heavy crimes it can range from jail time, huge fines, or both. And depending on the federal crime, getting fired or arrested. Execution is not currently legal in Kintland, however the B.O.D. is talking about changing this to punish crimes against civilization like cerial murder or terrorism. LEGAL PROCESSING/COURT JURASICTION
How does the court system and due process work in Kintland? When someone is accused of a crime, they are given a set trial date usually within 2-4 weeks of them deciding there needs to be a trial. They are brought into court, and are asked questions by 6 judges, one head judge and 5 others, and the 5 other judges have to decide if the accused person is guilty or innocent via questions and evidence while the head judge leads the case and asks most of the questions. If a person is guilty, then they will be given a sentence based on their crimes that were found guilty, how the person behaved in the court room, and the mental and legal status of the accused. The criminal will now be sent to one of 2 prison types, a normal rotting away prison, or a work camp prison were they will be made to do intense manual work for there sentence and sometimes their life. The guilty in Kintland are given no chance of getting out early from their sentence, there is no "parole" and no exceptions, they will carry out their guilty sentence unless the case is re-reviewed and the person is found innocent, and there for be released and get certain benefits based on what happened. If the original court in the city where the case was assigned and happened in cannot issue a verdict, then it will be passed onto the province court in the provinces capital and they will usually settle the case. However, if they cannot issue a verdict, then the case will go to the federal head court where they will have to issue a final verdict. The accused can bring in witnesses and their lawyers into the court room to help their case among the judges.
LAWYERS
Because there are no private law firms, people have to find their own laywers that went to law school amoungst their freinds, family, neighbors, or wherever else they can. Having and knowing multiple people that can help your case is recomended. When someone who studies law works as a laywer or as a lower judge for long enough and learns the Kintlandian law by heart, they can become a head judge for Kintland, to do this you will have to be recondnized and apointed by the ministry of law and legal offairs.
